Compostable vs biodegradable — they are not the same.

Many bag suppliers use the two terms interchangeably. They are not. Compostable means the bag has been tested to break down under specific composting conditions to a specific timeline. Biodegradable means the bag will eventually break down — with no defined timeline and no defined environment. If your aftercare service uses the word “compostable” anywhere visible (including in the certificate folder copy), ask the supplier for the underlying test.

The seam-strength test that prevents the worst-case failure.

The single most common failure of a pet remains bag is not the material breaking down — it is the seam. When the carrier is tilted, the seam takes the load. A seam tested to 5 kg of static pull will hold for most cases; a seam tested only to 2 kg is not adequate for medium and large companion weight.

Ask the supplier for the seam-strength test on the production batch, not the catalogue sample. The values differ.

What the certification really tests.

A compostable certification usually covers:

Disintegration. How fast the material breaks into small pieces under composting conditions.
Ecotoxicity. Whether the material leaves toxic residue in the compost.
Heavy metals. A pass/fail on a defined list of metals.

It does not test the seam strength, the zip integrity, or the print durability. Those are separate tests — ask for them too.

Storage guidance.

Bags degrade faster in humid storage. Keep them in their original sealed wrapper until the day of use. If your storage environment is warm and humid, expect the supplier-bag shelf life to shrink by ~20%. Order accordingly.
