What “private label” means for pet urns.
A private label urn is a catalogue urn with your logo, finish and lid treatment — not a new product. The tooling already exists. What changes is the artwork and a small batch of finish variations. The cost saving over ODM is significant; the cost saving over catalogue is modest but real.
Decisions to make before the brief.
- Logo placement. Lid vs base vs outer sleeve. Each carries a different finish cost.
- Finish family. Light oak, walnut, dark oak, painted matte, lacquered. Two finishes is the practical minimum for a 12-month SKU set.
- Lid treatment. Slide lid, hinged lid, screw-bottom lid. Each behaves differently at the family’s home.
- Engraving optionality. A disc-engraving service in your facility or at the supplier’s — both are feasible at modest minimums.
- Outer packaging. The kraft box, the printed sleeve, the tissue paper. Decide these with the certificate folder — the family sees them together.
Where the costs sit.
The lid treatment change is usually the largest single cost on a private label urn project. The base mark is the smallest. Outer packaging cost equals the inner product on a small-volume run.
A simple rule: if the per-unit cost of your private label urn is close to the catalogue product, the artwork is doing most of the work. If the per-unit cost has jumped meaningfully, a finish change has been included — verify it before signing.
A short lead-time plan you can borrow.
- Week 1 — finalise the artwork (logo + sleeve) and the finish family.
- Week 2 — supplier samples shipped; review against an existing reference urn.
- Week 3 — proof sign-off on the artwork and the finish reference.
- Week 4–8 — production run at the chosen minimum.
- Week 9 — in your warehouse, ready for the supplier’s evidence pack to be filed against the SKU.
Closing position.
