FAMILY RETURN · DESIGN · 7 MIN READ

Pet memorial certificate design: what families read first.

The hierarchy of words and numbers on a cremation certificate. How to design a certificate that gets kept, with a focus on what the family actually reads on the first day and again years later.

Reading order on the first day.

When a family first sees the certificate, they will read in this order: pet’s name, then the date, then the family name, then the case ID — and only then everything else. Design the certificate around that order, not around the aftercare facility’s brand. The brand matters, but it is the third thing the family reads, not the first.

Five elements that earn their line.

  1. The pet’s name. In the largest size on the certificate — always.
  2. The date of the service. A date the family will quote later when asked.
  3. The family name. Smaller than the pet’s name; larger than the case ID.
  4. The case ID. Smaller, but present. The ID is what connects the certificate to the rest of the service.
  5. A single line of service name and address. Quiet but present.

What to defer to the folder, not the certificate.

Items that earn their place in the folder but not on the certificate: process methodology (fire or water cremation), operator name, full system reference, eco statements, aftercare facility phone number. These belong in the folder cover or on the back of the certificate — not on the front.

The certificate is a commemorative document. It is not a marketing surface or an audit document.

A short list of design don’ts.

How this connects to the certificate folder.

The Certificate Presentation Folder is the second surface the family sees — usually before the certificate itself. The folder sets the tone; the certificate delivers the moment. Keep the two coherent: same finish family, same logo placement, same colour story. Private Label on both at the same time is the cheapest way to keep them coherent.
